Pre-Fall '20 Notes & Inspiration

For Pre Fall 2020, Ulla Johnson travels through time and place, weaving diverse cultural and historical references to glorious effect. Her color palette is at once intense and earthbound, inspired by the intensely graphic and visionary paintings of Native American artist T.C. Cannon. Hyper vibrant sun yellow, royal purple, and sunset pink juxtapose with grounded greens and rich earth tones of clay and Sierra.

Echoing the manner in which geometric dots and bands of color emblazon Cannon’s figures and landscape, oversized ikat spots explode across bold and beautiful volumes in cotton silk organza. Strong, sexy, and structural, the silhouettes are decidedly fresh with torqued hemlines, delicate hand pleats, and cutaway bodices. The paring of pink and purple is striking, while tonal white on white feels soft and elegant.
