Casa Batlló, Barcelona

The first light of day transforms the undulating façade of the building into a sparkling sea, its waves made of ceramic tile, cut glass, and stone. The Ulla Johnson Autumn/Winter 2022 collection unfurls against the structured dreamscapes of Gaudi’s Casa Battló in Barcelona, an architectural wonder inspired by the organic shapes of the sea.

The baroque psychedelia of a collaged cosmic print on a flowing frock blends in seamlessly with the swirling motifs of an interior wall, while cotton poplin and handknit mohair intarsia in hues of early dawn complement the pale tones of the magnificently patterned rooftop.

Richly crafted fabrications, wildly vibrant patterns, and glistening metallics create a visual conversation with the colorfully dappled walls, checkered tones, and mosaic decorations of Casa Battló. The collection’s meditation on the instinctive, curvilinear shapes of the natural world is illuminated to magnificent effect by the extraordinary structures of Gaudi’s artistry.
