Swaying veils of hand-woven raffia evoke an otherworldly atmosphere inside a sweeping industrial space—a transportive melding of the organic world and the urban—while a nuanced perfume, crafted by Perfumer H, drifts in the air. Structural silhouettes contrast with fitted gestures and intricately abstract detailing, paring down a utilitarian femininity to a new self-possessed sensuality. A model glides across the floor, disrupting delicate sand stencils as her lambent, animalistic-striped frock electrifies the runway. The Ulla Johnson Spring/Summer 2024 collection comes to life at Powerhouse Arts, a new contemporary art center in Brooklyn that supports and celebrates creatives of all genres, as well as the bonds that exist between all makers. This runway show is the first of its kind in the space.
